The meeting runs in a main room. At the right moment the host splits people into groups, and each group gets its own small room with its own audio. Groups work in parallel, the host can look in on any of them, and on a signal everyone returns to the main room.

The main trap in free Zoom is not the rooms, it is the timer. A lesson or a workshop with group work almost always runs longer than 40 minutes: explanation, groups, debrief. At minute 40 the meeting ends for everyone, including people who are in their groups at that moment, and you have to gather them all again. How groups work on Joyin

- Groups work in the browser. People on the Joyin mobile app stay in the main room for now, so it is better to join a meeting with groups by link from the browser.
- Recording covers the main room only. If you need the groups' results, ask each group to report back to everyone.
- A meeting holds up to 100 participants. For very large conferences with hundreds of people in breakout rooms, paid Zoom is still stronger.
How to run your first meeting with groups
- Create a meeting and send the link instead of a Zoom ID.
- Start in the main room: explain the task and share your screen.
- Tap Groups, choose the size and how to split, set a timer.
- While the groups work, visit them in turn and answer calls for help.
