Camera or microphone not working in a browser video call: fixes
If the camera does not work in the browser or nobody can hear you, nine times out of ten the cause is permissions: at some point the browser or the operating system was told "no" and quietly remembered it. Less often, another program is holding the camera or the wrong device is selected. Work through the steps below in order. Most problems are fixed in two or three minutes, without reinstalling anything or calling support. The steps apply to any browser-based meeting, including Joyin.
Step 1: check the browser permissions
The first time you join a video meeting, the browser asks whether the site may use the camera and microphone. If you clicked "Block", even by accident, the question will not appear again, and the devices simply will not work on that site.
How to allow the camera and microphone again:
- Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium browsers. Click the icon to the left of the address (a lock or a settings icon). A list of permissions opens; switch Camera and Microphone to Allow and reload the page.
- Safari on Mac. Safari menu, Settings for This Website, set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
- Firefox. Click the camera or microphone icon in the address bar, remove the block, reload the tab.
- Safari on iPhone or iPad. Settings app, Safari, Camera and Microphone, set to Ask or Allow. Or tap the "AA" icon in the address bar, Website Settings.
- Chrome on Android. Tap the lock icon next to the address, Permissions, allow Camera and Microphone.
Reloading the page after changing permissions is mandatory; without it the browser will not reconnect the devices.
Step 2: check whether another program is holding the camera
A webcam can be used by only one program at a time. If Zoom, a WhatsApp call, Teams or a second tab with the same meeting is open in the background, the browser gets a black square instead of a picture.
Close every program and tab that might have grabbed the camera, then reload the meeting page. On laptops with an indicator light next to the camera you can see it immediately: the light is on but there is no picture in the call, so something else has the camera.
Antivirus and security suites belong here too: some of them "protect" the webcam by blocking access for everyone. Check their settings if the camera works nowhere.
Step 3: check the system privacy settings
Windows and macOS can deny camera and microphone access for the entire system, in which case the browser does not even see the devices.
- Windows 10 and 11. Settings, Privacy and security, Camera and Microphone. Turn on camera access and microphone access, and make sure desktop apps, including your browser, are allowed.
- macOS. System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera and Microphone. Tick the box next to your browser and restart the browser.
- Android. Settings, Apps, your browser, Permissions, allow Camera and Microphone.
- iPhone. Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera and Microphone, make sure the browser is on and enabled.
A separate case is the wrong default device. If a headset with a microphone, an external webcam and built-in devices are all connected, the browser may have picked the wrong one. Choose the camera and microphone from the list in the meeting settings. On Joyin this is done on the preview screen before you join and again during the call, where you can also switch cameras on the fly.
Step 4: no sound, in either direction
Sound problems split into two: "they cannot hear me" and "I cannot hear them".
They cannot hear you:
- check that you are not muted, both in the meeting and on the headset (many headphones have their own mute button);
- say something and watch the microphone indicator in the interface. If the bar does not move, sound is not reaching the browser: go back to steps 1 to 3;
- pick a different microphone in the device list. Often "built-in" is selected while you are speaking into a headset.
You cannot hear them:
- check the system volume and the output device: speakers, or a pair of Bluetooth headphones that is switched on in a drawer;
- reconnect the headphones or re-pair the Bluetooth connection;
- reload the page; sound sometimes disappears after devices are switched mid-call.
Everyone hears an echo: this is not a broken microphone. Someone's speakers are feeding sound back into their microphone. Ask everyone without headphones to put some on, or to unmute only while speaking.
Step 5: quick workarounds when there is no time
The meeting is already running and the sound still has not appeared? Three fast exits:
- Another browser. Open the same link in Chrome or Edge. A fresh browser without accumulated blocks solves the problem more often than not.
- Incognito or private mode. Permissions are asked again there, and old blocks do not apply.
- Your phone. Open the meeting link on a smartphone. Joyin works fully in the mobile browser, and camera and microphone on phones almost never misbehave.
A good habit is to join important meetings a couple of minutes early and check the devices. Joyin's preview screen exists for exactly this: you see your camera and microphone level before anyone else does. How joining works and what to check beforehand is in browser video call with no download.
Camera works, but the picture breaks up
Separate a broken device from a bad connection. If the picture is there but freezes and stutters, or sound arrives in fragments, the camera is fine and the network is not. Common causes are Wi-Fi far from the router, a busy household connection (someone streaming in 4K in the next room), or a corporate network tunnel that sends the call on a long detour through another country before it reaches the meeting server.
Quick checks: move closer to the router or use a cable, disconnect a company network tunnel you do not need for the call, pause downloads and cloud backups, turn off your own camera for a minute and see whether the audio settles.
A checklist to send to guests, students and parents
If you host meetings regularly, save this and send it once:
- Open the link in Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox, updated.
- When the browser asks, allow the camera and microphone.
- If nothing appears, click the lock icon next to the address, allow both, reload.
- Close other apps that use the camera.
- Use headphones if you can.
- Still stuck? Open the link on your phone.
Tutors in particular find that sending this before the first lesson saves the first ten minutes; see best free video platform for online tutoring.
FAQ
The browser never asks for the camera. Why?
The answer is already stored (usually "Block"), or access is denied at the system level. Do steps 1 and 3: reset the site permission and check the system privacy settings.
The camera shows a black screen even though access is allowed.
Another program or tab is holding the camera; close them. If that does not help, restart the browser. On laptops check the physical camera shutter, which is forgotten more often than you would think.
People hear me with a terrible echo. Is my microphone broken?
No. Echo usually means someone's speakers are feeding back into their microphone. Ask everyone to use headphones, or to unmute only while speaking.
Does all of this apply on a phone?
Yes. In a mobile browser permissions are granted the same way, on request when you join. If you refused by accident, open the site settings in the browser or the browser's permissions in the system settings and enable the camera and microphone.
You do not need a real meeting to confirm the fix: create a test room on joyin.work, with no registration or install, and check that your picture and sound are there.
